Review of Articulation Station Pro By: Little Bee Speech

Reviewed by: Helen H. Wagner, M.S., CCC-SLP

Articulation Station Pro, by Little Bee Speech, is the most full-featured articulation therapy app available. Created for parents, SLPs, and teachers, it is designed to teach English sound production skills to children as well as adults (although the program appears to be most suitable for school-aged children). This app is innovative in that it allows up to 6 users to practice their own, individually targeted speech sounds in the initial, medial and final positions in words, sentences and stories, all within the same group session! This is a major breakthrough in the articulation app world! Take a small group of up to 6 students, quickly program in what sound, position and activity each user needs, and you are ready to go! John will be given /f/ sounds in initial position of words, Jane will be given her /p/ sounds in sentences, and Charles can practice his /th/ sounds while reading sentences. And the best part of all? When the group is done, the data for each child is saved and can be printed and shared! iTunes

Articulation Station Pro contains 22 sound programs which target sounds in the initial, medial and final positions of words, sentences and stories. Most of the sounds have 60 targets each (p, b, m, d, n, t, k, g, f, v, ch, j, z, sh, th). Some sound programs contain blends (l, r, s). All together, the program boasts over 1,000 target words. The user may even modify word selections and save word lists!
To Begin: Enter user names via the clipboard at the bottom of the page. Tap the group icon to create members in a small therapy group (up to 6 per group). After the members have been selected, tap a target sound and select practice level and positions for each student when prompted. When completed, the student names will appear at the top of the screen. Each student will be able to watch to see when it is his turn!
Articulation Station Pro comes with instructions for use and a video tutorial. If you need help in showing a student how to produce a sound, tap the light bulb located on the upper right corner of each sound card, and the card will flip over to present Quick tips on teaching the sound! Everything is ready for your group session!

There are 6 unique activities within the program. All are fun and engaging, with beautiful full-color photographs. In each activity presented, a user can record his own productions and replay, and data can be taken as to the accuracy of the responses. The SLP, parent, teacher or even student can score!
Flashcard Activity: Real life images to practice sounds in initial, medial or final positions. Matching Game: Play concentration with speech cards! Rotating Sentences: Repetitive sentences in which only the targeted word changes. Spin the wheel to change the rotating picture!

Unique Sentences: A new sentence for each target word with an average of three target words per sentence! Level 1 Stories: Short, silly stories for each sound position with pictures, multiple target words and comprehension questions. These are fun stories! Level 2 Stories: These are longer stories for each sound position with multiple target words and comprehension questions. Great level for readers, auditory bombardment, or as conversation starters.

Wish List: Articulation Station Pro is just about perfect, but could use a few tweaks. Here are some small suggestions: 1.Consider the option of saving the audio sound production files for another measure of progress. 2. Consider making a separate auditory bombardment section /sounds in isolation level. 3. Consider removing the links to Facebook, iTunes and the internet, or make them significantly more difficult to access.
Overall Impression:In my opinion, this is the best articulation app on the market. It meets the needs of all of my students. It is fun, motivating, and wildly engaging! My students beg to “play” and don’t consider it “work”. The most important thing I have seen is that my students have taken significantly increased responsibility in monitoring and correcting their own speech! They are also listening and helping out their friends during practice! I have seen tremendous progress with the increased intrinsic motivation which this app provides. I love to use this with my projector so that everyone can see! (30 pin VGA adaptor). Articulation Station Pro is, without question, my most favorite, “go-to” app for sound production practice! If you can only get one articulation app, then this is without doubt the one to start with.
Articulation Station Pro is a 5 star + app! Helen H. Wagner is an experienced public school SLP, working with a wide variety of students. She loves using technology in therapy.
